Is Moving to the UK for Work Still an Option?

The chief Brexit negotiator for the European Union will be in Ireland this week to meet with government officials here as plans progress for the UK to leave the EU. Next month, the Taoiseach will chair an-island dialogue on the impact of Brexit. And in Northern Ireland, a broad coalition of groups is bringing a legal challenge to the referendum result to the High Court arguing that it violates the Good Friday Agreement.

While one recruitment website has recorded a 20% increase in the number of workers in the UK looking for jobs in Ireland, Brexit hasn’t quashed the hopes of many Irish workers with job prospects there. While the uncertainty about the details of how the UK will deal with the EU might deter send many Irish people looking further afield for work, others might see an opportunity created by those workers in the UK looking to leave.

Brexit and Plan B

With so much uncertainty, it makes sense to have a Plan B. Maybe those with the right skills will be able to settle down and work in the UK without any problem. Maybe the whole Brexit plan will be torpedoed by the lawsuit. But for those who are looking at the UK simply because it is so near might want to look a little further afield and brush up their skills in any foreign languages they’ve studied. The situation is more difficult for those with personal connections in the UK who don’t have British citizenship.

Spending a year in Canada, the USA, Australia or anywhere else before making a serious attempt to settle in the UK is a chance to develop stronger job skills and become more competitive. Or conversely, with the UK planning to formally start Brexit negotiations early next year, some might want to get a foot in the door sooner rather than later in the hopes of being grandfathered in.

It seems unlikely that the door to the UK will be totally shut for Irish workers. The weight of history, the Common Travel Area and the Good Friday Agreement should keep it propped open. Whether Irish workers want to live in the new, non-European UK is another question entirely.
