Thinking Of Moving To AustraliaHere at Spratt Personal Shipping, Dublin we have helped many people emigrate to Australia…and back!

Outside of the United Kingdom, Oz is the most popular destination for post-crash emigrants leaving Ireland. Some have become permanent residents and even citizens, but most plan to go for a year or two of work (and a lot of sunshine!) before returning home.

We’ve prepared some tips at Spratt Personal Shipping for any people thinking of making the big move.

Visas

In order tp move to Australia you need a visa. Not just any visa, but the right one to suit your circumstances.

The most popular one that people apply for is the Working Holiday Visa. This is mostly availed of by those who only intend to stay for a year. The Working Holiday Visa allows those aged between 18 and 30 to work for the entire length of their stay if they wish, although one can only work a maximum of six month with any one employer. Which gives you a perfect excuse to travel around the great land of Oz!

Another option available to some is the Employer Sponsored Visa. According to The Irish Times: “You need to have a job offer in from an approved employer in Australia to apply, and the employer will have to prove your skills can’t be sourced among Australian citizens or permanent residents in the local area.” This also allows your partner and children to accompany you.

Save

Donna Walsh is an Irish emigrant in Oz who spoke to the Irish Examiner. Her biggest piece of advice? Save up before you move.

“Australia is expensive. It can be quite daunting at first. You can’t help but notice the cost of groceries, alcohol, and rent relative to Irish prices. Ensure you have sufficient cash and…allow for a few weeks of not having any earnings,” she advised

Other Tips

“Apply for an Australian bank account before you leave. You will need to transfer money to this account before you depart. This will save you on international fees and you will need an Australian bank account for your new employment.”

Bring as much official documentation with you as you can. Take photocopies before you leave of key documents. The more you have the easier it will be to secure accommodation.
