overseas shipping to hot climatesNovember is the time of year when many of us start to entertain fantasies of moving to warmer climates. The lure of sunny skies and gentle breezes is pretty strong when we are waking to frost and flooding here. But for some, it isn’t a mere daydream. If living in a warmer country is a goal for you, and you are taking steps to make the big change, you will need to understand your options for overseas shipping. If you are unsure if you want to take everything you own or just the most essential and sentimental items, it helps to understand how personal shipping works.

You can ship almost anything almost anywhere. Furniture, exercise equipment, clothing, books, kitchenware, dishes, bedding, toys, even your car or motorcycle – the list is endless. If it poses no safety issue and is your personal property for private use (and not commercial goods), you are unlikely to encounter any bans. But the fact that you can do something does not mean you should.

Moving abroad is an opportunity to declutter and downsize. We all accumulate things we don’t want; we do not even know why we have some of them. Other items might be practical here in Ireland, but useless in a warmer or drier climate.

What to Bring and What Not to Bring

A new life in a new place means you will need some new things – and you have some old stuff you won’t need. Do your homework about the specifics of the climate where you are going. Is there a monsoon season? Is it hot during the day but cold at night? Investigate the details of the housing available. Is air conditioning the norm? Is central heating standard? How is the ventilation?

  • Clothing: you’ll probably visit Ireland, so don’t toss all of your winter gear. Just pare it down. If there is the wet season, it’s probably going to be a muddy season so do pack those boots. You might not need a woolly winter hat, but hats with brims are great for keeping the sun off your face. And layers are your best friend with the temperature changes significantly when the sun sets.
  • Kitchen: balance the comfort of cooking familiar things with the practicality. If you are moving to a desert climate, you might be baking less and cooking fewer roast dinners! But if you love cooking, do bring what you need to make familiar recipes such as your kitchen scales.
  • Housewares: bedding and towels make great, eco-friendly padding for your overseas shipping, but you probably don’t need the heavier tog duvets. The quality of towels and sheets might not be what you are used to, and these are handy items to have as soon as you arrive.
  • Leisure:  you can ship the most awkwardly shaped exercise equipment without a problem. But will you be using your exercise bike much in the heat? In a warmer climate, you might enjoy camping more often, but check the night-time temperatures and weed out items such as a tent heater you won’t need.

Moving to a dramatically different climate can be a fantastic adventure. It can also involve an extra layer of homesickness and adjustment. Having familiar items is comforting, so it makes sense to bring things you will enjoy having in your overseas shipping. But you can save both money and stress by not bringing things that are inappropriate to the climate. Our team at Spratt Personal Shipping can advise you on what to keep and what not, provide you with a quick quote and answer any questions you might have during the process, so you can feel your belongings are on safe hands.
